Eeva Primmer, a renowned expert in environmental policy and governance, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). Her appointment marks a significant milestone for SEI, as she brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to the role.
Primmer's journey to SEI is an inspiring one. She previously served as Research Director at the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke), where she led groundbreaking work on societal change and information quality. Her efforts ensured that Syke's research had a tangible impact on policy and implementation, driving sustainability transformation. Since 2020, she has also been the first deputy to Syke's Director General, showcasing her exceptional leadership skills.
Her international presence is equally impressive. As a Bureau Member of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and a Panel Member of the UNEP International Resource Panel (IRP), Primmer has been instrumental in shaping global conversations on biodiversity, resource governance, and sustainability. Her focus on evidence-based decision-making has been a driving force behind these discussions.
SEI Board Chair Lennart Båge expressed his enthusiasm for Primmer's appointment, highlighting her exceptional leadership and scientific expertise. He emphasized her ability to bridge the gap between science, policy, and practice, which is crucial in today's complex world.
Primmer's academic background is equally impressive. Originally trained in forestry, she holds a PhD in Agriculture and Forestry from the University of Helsinki and is an adjunct professor (Docent) of Environmental Policy. Her research interests encompass environmental governance, ecosystem services, biodiversity, and natural resource management, with a particular focus on institutional adaptation to environmental challenges.
In her own words, Primmer emphasizes the importance of integrating diverse knowledge streams to address sustainability challenges effectively. She believes that a deep understanding of ecosystems and the environment, coupled with rigorous knowledge production about human systems, is essential for informed decision-making.
As Primmer takes on her new role as Executive Director, SEI looks forward to her leadership and the positive impact it will have on the organization's mission. Her appointment begins on May 1, 2026, and SEI is eager to share opportunities for the community to meet her and learn more about her vision for the Institute.
