While the job market cools, HR and recruitment roles are heating up—but why? In a surprising twist, job advertisements for human resources and recruitment positions defied the national trend by inching upward at the end of 2025, even as most industries experienced a downturn in hiring. But here’s where it gets intriguing: this uptick comes at a time when overall job ads plummeted by 1.2% month-on-month and 3.5% year-on-year, according to SEEK’s latest Employment Report. So, what’s driving this anomaly?
The report highlights that HR and recruitment job ads rose by a modest 0.2% in December, joining only two other sectors—sport and recreation (0.2%) and consulting and strategy (0.3%)—in seeing increased demand. But is this a sign of resilience or a fleeting blip? SEEK senior economist Blair Chapman notes, ‘Job ads continued their downward trend in December, capping a softening that began in August. The 2025 slowdown was slightly more pronounced than historical patterns, particularly around the holiday season.’
And this is the part most people miss: While HR roles saw a slight boost, other industries faced steep declines. The legal sector led the drop with a 3.4% fall in job postings, followed by retail and consumer products (-2.6%) and insurance and superannuation (-2.2%). Could this shift signal a broader reevaluation of workforce priorities?
On the candidate side, activity also waned. Applications per job ad dipped by 0.3% month-on-month in November, reflecting a gradual decline since June. But here’s the silver lining: Some regions, like the Northern Territory (9.4%), Tasmania (2.3%), the Australian Capital Territory (1.6%), and South Australia (1.3%), saw quarterly growth in job ads. Is this localized growth a harbinger of recovery, or an isolated trend?
As January traditionally brings renewed hiring momentum, Chapman remains cautiously optimistic: ‘Whether this rebound will reverse the downward trend in job ads remains to be seen.’ But the bigger question lingers: Are HR and recruitment roles becoming the backbone of a shifting job market, or is this merely a temporary anomaly?
What do you think? Is the rise in HR job ads a sign of organizational focus on internal restructuring, or is it just a statistical outlier? Share your thoughts in the comments—let’s spark a debate!
