A School District in Turmoil: Judson ISD Superintendent's Future Hangs in the Balance
The Judson Independent School District in Live Oak, Texas, is embroiled in a leadership crisis that has left the community bewildered and concerned. But here's where it gets controversial... After a marathon meeting shrouded in secrecy, the school board initially voted to remove Superintendent Milton “Rob” Fields III, only to retract that decision hours later. This dramatic reversal has sparked questions about the board’s motives and the district’s future.
Following a closed-session meeting that lasted over three hours, the board rescinded a 4-3 motion to relieve Fields of his duties. Instead, they voted to hire legal counsel and proceed with actions discussed behind closed doors. And this is the part most people miss... Despite public inquiries, the board remained tight-lipped about what was actually discussed during this private session, leaving parents, employees, and community members in the dark.
Hours after the meeting, a statement from Board President Monica Ryan revealed that Fields had been placed on administrative leave with pay. Assistant Superintendent of Technology Lacey Gosch will step in as acting superintendent until further notice. Trustee José A. Macias Jr., the sole dissenting vote, took to Facebook to express his frustration, labeling the move as “100% political.” He emphasized, “Dr. Fields is still our Superintendent, and for now, that is what matters the most.”
Macias further criticized the board’s focus on the superintendent’s employment rather than addressing pressing academic and budgetary challenges. He noted that this isn’t the first time Fields’ position has been under scrutiny—the board has placed agenda items regarding his employment at least three times in the past year, though no action was taken in previous meetings.
Here’s where opinions start to clash... Fields has been at the center of contentious discussions about potential school closures, program cuts, and staff reductions amid a budget deficit. Trustee Laura Stanford voiced concerns that removing Fields at such a critical time could destabilize the district, particularly as it grapples with major financial decisions and the absence of a CFO. She also warned of the potential impact on STAAR test results, noting, “When you create unrest, it filters down to the kids. It’s going to hit the classroom—you can’t avoid it.”
Fields, a Live Oak native and Judson High School alumnus, has deep roots in the community. He was appointed superintendent in May 2023, and his contract was extended to June 2028 in October 2024. His background includes serving as assistant principal at Stevens High School and principal of Wagner High School, as well as a 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force.
What do you think? Is the board’s handling of this situation justified, or is it a politically motivated distraction from more pressing issues? Share your thoughts in the comments below. This story is still developing, so stay tuned for updates as the district navigates this turbulent chapter.
