Melbourne's youth gangs are on high alert as Victoria Police declares a relentless war on their activities, promising an 'incredibly uncomfortable' existence for those involved.
In a significant move following a major crackdown in 2025, law enforcement is sending a clear message to young individuals entangled in gang life: expect constant scrutiny and unwavering pursuit. Last year alone, Victoria Police brought 4300 charges against alleged youth gang members in the city. This extensive operation included nearly 400 charges specifically for the possession of dangerous weapons, such as machetes and firearms.
Deputy Commissioner Bob Hill emphasized the police's commitment, stating, "These gangs may show a blatant disregard for the safety of other Victorians; however, rest assured they will continue to gain a strong appreciation for the tenacity of Victoria Police." He further warned, "If you choose to be involved in one of these gangs and endanger our community, your life will be made incredibly uncomfortable."
Beyond proactive weapon seizures, authorities are exploring the implementation of more unlawful association notices for gang members aged 18 and above. The aim is to discourage teenagers from associating with organized crime syndicates. And this is the part most people miss: this strategy is designed to preemptively disrupt gang recruitment and operations.
The speed of investigations into youth gang-related stabbings is also a key focus. In Victoria last year, there were 48 such incidents, with an average of just 17 days elapsing before an arrest was made. This rapid response underscores the urgency and efficiency of the police's approach.
Furthermore, police are intensifying their efforts against firearm offences. Last year, 69 youth gang members faced charges related to firearms. The crackdown extends to both young users and older suppliers, with 70 individuals connected to youth gangs currently subject to firearm prohibition orders (FPOs). Notably, one gang implicated in multiple killings has 18 members who are already under FPOs.
When we look at the most common charges filed against alleged youth gang members in 2025, the picture becomes clearer. Car theft led the list with 831 charges, followed by aggravated burglaries (601 charges), robberies (421 charges), weapon offences (394 charges), and assaults (385 charges). In total, last year saw 476 alleged youth gang members arrested a staggering 1480 times.
As of New Year's Day this year, police are actively monitoring 608 gang members who are part of 34 distinct groups. Deputy Commissioner Hill reiterated the success of their disruptive strategy, stating, "Every single day, we are arresting and charging youth gang members for serious offending due to this disruptive approach." He added, "When gangs refuse to heed these warnings and still choose to engage in violence and other serious offending, our record speaks for itself. Those responsible are rapidly tracked down, removed from the community, and fronted to face justice."
