Michael Porter Jr. shines amidst the Nets' struggles, making a strong case for All-Star selection.
The Brooklyn Nets, who finished 2025 on a high note with seven wins in their last 11 games, have struggled to maintain their momentum in 2026. After losing nine of their first 11 games, they faced the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, sitting at 12-29 and 13th in the 15-team Eastern Conference.
Amidst the team's challenges, Michael Porter Jr. has emerged as a bright spot. Acquired from the Denver Nuggets last July, Porter Jr. has been a key player for the Nets, averaging impressive career-highs of 25.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. These numbers have not gone unnoticed, as Porter Jr. is now in the running for All-Star consideration.
The final vote count placed Porter Jr. ninth among Eastern Conference players. While the top five recipients are starters, the remaining seven spots are decided by the conference's head coaches. Porter Jr. attributes his success to the Nets' coaching staff, particularly head coach Jordi Fernandez.
'When an organization believes in you and reiterates confidence, it can significantly impact a player's performance and confidence, especially for young players,' Porter Jr. said. 'Jordi and the Nets organization have instilled confidence in us, encouraging us to keep shooting, even when we miss. This consistent message has been a game-changer for me and the team.'
Despite the team's overall struggles, Porter Jr. is unlikely to be an All-Star. However, he may still have a chance to be a replacement player if an injury occurs.
The Nets will face the Boston Celtics at the Barclays Center tomorrow, followed by a five-game road trip starting in Los Angeles against the Clippers and ending with the Phoenix Suns next Tuesday.
