But here's where it gets controversial: Mr. Guildford initially denied any involvement of AI when questioned by MPs. He later sent an apology, admitting to unintentionally misleading them. The force also faced criticism for another piece of intelligence regarding Maccabi fans' behavior at a match in Amsterdam, which was contradicted by Dutch authorities.
And this is the part most people miss: the police assessment claimed that Maccabi supporters targeted Muslim communities in Amsterdam, a claim refuted by the Dutch police. Additionally, allegations of Maccabi fans throwing innocent bystanders into a river were not supported by Dutch authorities.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed her lack of confidence in Mr. Guildford, further fueling the controversy. When the chief constable announced his retirement, local police commissioner Simon Foster praised his honor and dedication to the force. However, today, both the commissioner and the force have referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), deeming it unacceptable and detrimental to public trust.
Acting Chief Constable Scott Green offered a sincere apology on behalf of the force, acknowledging their failings and the damage caused to their relationship with the Jewish community.
