Toyota takes a stand against car thefts with a surprising move. But is it enough?
Amid a surge in vehicle thefts, particularly targeting Toyota's LandCruiser, HiLux, and RAV4 models, the automotive giant has introduced a steering wheel club lock for existing cars in Australia. This move comes as a response to the increasing sophistication of car thieves, who are now utilizing advanced techniques to access a vehicle's Controller Area Network (CAN bus) and bypass security measures.
Toyota has already implemented factory-level security upgrades for new models, making it harder for thieves to unlock doors, disable tracking, and start the engine. However, these enhancements won't be available for older models. Instead, Toyota is offering 'factory-approved' accessories, including the steering wheel lock, which retails for $200, and an upcoming additional immobilizer.
The steering wheel lock, a time-tested visual deterrent, is designed to be universal and easy to use. It features a smooth-extending arm with an internal spring system and a four-point contact grip for security. The lock also includes anti-tampering features and a soft resin coating to prevent damage. But here's the catch: if the keys are lost, they cannot be replaced.
